My name is Lisa Michie and I am a Certified Play Therapist and AutPlay Provider and my goal is to help children heal through play. I started my working journey as a primary school teacher, which I undertook for 19 years. However, having seen the difficulties some children faced in their personal lives and not being able to directly help them in a classroom environment, I decided to change my career path and train to become a Play Therapist.
I am passionate about helping children who have experienced some sort of loss, trauma or upset; and as a parent of a child with autism, I care deeply about supporting children who are considered neuro-diverse. As well as my PTUK training (via Leeds Beckett University), I have completed additional training in Level 3 Safeguarding, PREVENT, Developmental Trauma, Regulation Skills for Children & Young People, Certification in AutPlay, Early Attachment Play, Early Bird Plus & Teen Plus training for parents of children with Autism.
I offer weekly one-to-one and group play therapy sessions, to schools and families, for ages 4-12, in and around the Wareham area of Dorset (term-time only). I also offer Attachment Play sessions to a parent and their child if required.
I follow specific therapeutic and ethical principles and boundaries to ensure a strong and positive relationship is built with clients, each being valued for their own uniqueness. Through the use of arts material and play resources, playing and creating in the therapy room creates the facilitative environment for the reflective discovery of therapeutic change. This means the child feels safe, supported, heard, understood and able to approach deep and strong feelings. Emotions, thoughts and learning are physical, brain-shaping events and as synapse’s fire, new neural pathways are made and sustained.
